About

The Jerry Sanders Creative Design Competition

Every March robotics teams from Universities across the Midwest converge upon the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for a two day competition that tests their skills and creativity. The Jerry Sanders Creative Design Competition, sponsored by Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), is an annual competition that started in 1987, making this its 25th year.

Background: The Jerry Sanders Creative Design Competition is one of the oldest continuing robotics competitions in America. It predates both Battlebots and the high school oriented FIRST Robotics Competition by several years. The competition is named for Walter Jeremiah Sanders III: a co-founder and longtime CEO of AMD (as well as a University of Illinois graduate). The competition is organized and administrated by University of Illinois students.

Competition Information: The Competition runs in two-year cycles. This is the second year of our “collection” game. Teams navigate around a specially constructed course collecting foam balls and depositing them in their scoring bins – but look out! Contact zones, steal periods, new ways to score, a king of the hill area, and a dynamic course complicate the game so that strategy and cunning in addition to engineering skills are required to win!

Event Information: Competitors and their robots will compete against each other during Engineer Open House at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign from:

9:00 am until 4:00 pm on Friday March 9, 2012
9:00 am until 3:00 pm on Saturday March 10, 2012

For directions to Kenney Gym Annex, which is across the street from Grainger Library, visit Google Maps or enter 1301 W Springfield Ave, Urbana, IL 61801 into your preferred trip planner.
